Box Score (Aurora, Ill.) – The Missouri S&T Miner volleyball team had its nine match winning streak snapped by Grand Valley
3-1 (25-17, 23-25, 21-25, 26-28) on Friday morning at the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover at the Great Lakes Center in Aurora, Ill. S&T hit .214 percent for the match, but couldn't contain the Laker attack as they hit .260 percent.
The Miners (13-6) controlled the opening set grabbing an early lead that it wouldn't relinquish. S&T led by as many as eight in the set before ending with the 25-17 win. The Miners hit a blistering .407 percent with 12 kills against one error and was led by
Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) with five kills and
Alison Mueller (Bartelso, Ill./Mater Dei ) had four kills.
The second set featured 12 ties and six lead changes. S&T led 19-17, but gave up three straight points to make it 20-19 in favor of Grand Valley (14-4). The Miners battled back to tie it at 22-all after back-to-back errors by Grand Valley. S&T narrowly missed regaining the lead on a service error by
Jennifer Costello (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South ) that just missed the fingers of a Laker defender to land out of bounds to give GV a 23-22 lead. Meyer recorded another kill to tie it back up at 23-all, but the Lakers scored the last two points to square the match at 1-1.
In the third set, Grand Valley raced out to a 10-0 lead. The Miners would get as close as 24-21, but couldn't complete the comeback as Megan Schroeder knocked home a kill for the win.
The fourth set was just as tight as the second set. S&T fell behind 6-3 before running off four straight points to lead 7-6. The Miners stretched their lead to as many as five points seven different times with the last coming at 21-16. The Lakers then ran off four straight to get within 21-20. S&T had leads of 23-21 and 24-22 but were unable to close Grand Valley out as the Lakers scored six of the final eight points to win the set 28-26 and the match.
Kelly Kosmopolis (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) and Mueller paced the Miner attack with 13 kills each. Meyer contributed 12 to the effort while
Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) had nine. Costello finished with 46 set assists and
Jocelyn DeMotte (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) had 17 digs.
Grand Valley was led by Abby Aiken with 19 kills. Betsy Ronda and Eno Umoh had 15 kills each. Umoh hit a sizzling .682 percent in the match with no errors. Clair Ruhenkamp had 52 assists while Christina Canepa had 19 digs.
S&T will play Northwood on Friday evening at 5:30 p.m.
