QUINCY, Ill. -- The Missouri S&T Miners got a pair of goals from Peter Haw (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West ) in its season opening 2-0 win over Truman State on Saturday night at Quincy. The win over the Bulldogs was the first for the Miners in 10 years.
The Miners ranked 13th in the National Soccer Coaches Association Pre-Season poll while the Bulldogs came in are 15th.
S&T (1-0) had some good chances early but didn't connect until the seventh minute. Oscar Alvarez (Mexico City, Mexico/Colegio Ciudad de Mexico) played a ball into the box for Ryan Muich (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) that Truman's (0-1) keeper tried to cut-off. He couldn't as Muich was able to steal the ball away and left it for Haw who blasted it into an open goal.
The Bulldogs put some heavy pressure on the Miner defense over the final 30 minutes of the opening frame but S&T held strong. Pat McNamee (Fenton, Mo./Vianney ) turned away a couple of shots including one from point blank range that would've tied the game near the end of the half.
Each team had five shots in the period, two of which were on goal.
The Miners added to their lead in the 67th minute. J.J. Bilyeu (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers) played a cross into the box for Peter Vaccaro (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West ). Vaccaro headed it back to Haw at the top of the box. Haw then blasted into the lower left hand corner of the goal.
Truman threatened late hitting a shot off the post and had two more shots stopped by McNamee.
The Bulldogs outshot S&T 12-10 and put five on goal compared to three for S&T.
The Miners play again on Sunday night taking on Lindenwood at 5 p.m., in Quincy, Ill.
