Maryville stuns #7-ranked Miners

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Over the past two seasons, Maryville University has given Missouri S&T's men's soccer team fits when the squads have hooked up.  The Miners won both of those games, but the Saints got the better of things Friday afternoon as they upset the seventh-ranked Miners 2-0.

The Miners had to score late in regulation time to win the game two seasons ago, then needed a goal in the second overtime period to take last season's meeting in St. Louis.  But on Friday, the Saints got a goal in each half to end the Miners' four-game winning streak just five days after S&T had upended the No. 1-ranked team in NCAA Division II.

S&T had some scoring chances early, but misfired on three shot attempts and were called for offsides on three occasions.  As a result, Maryville got the first goal of the contest at the 22:13 mark when Nick Doherty got to a loose ball in the box and put a shot past Pat McNamee (Fenton, Mo./Vianney ).

Maryville carried that lead into the intermission, then got a second goal at the 59:14 mark from Kory Dowell.  The Miners were stifled from that point by the Saints' defense as they got only two shots off over the final 30-plus minutes of play.

McNamee made four saves in goal for S&T, who fell to 7-2 overall and 5-2 in the GLVC; the Miners entered the day in a three-way tie for first place in the conference race.

S&T will return to play Sunday with a 2:30 p.m. game at Missouri-St. Louis.
