ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team was finally able to shake free from a stubborn William Jewell squad in the second half Sunday, as the 11th-ranked Miners got goals from Spencer Brinkmeyer and Trent Doerner to post a 2-0 victory over the Cardinals in their home opener at the S&T Soccer Field.

Brinkmeyer broke a scoreless tie at the 60:34 mark as he headed in a rebound off a shot from Doerner. The play was set up by Jervis Atagana, who made a feed to Doerner for an open shot from about 15 yards away that was stopped up into the air by WJC goalkeeper Justin Schmidt.

However, Brinkmeyer was able to get to the rebound and headed the ball by Schmidt to put S&T on the scoreboard.

Doerner, who had hit the goal post on a free kick attempt earlier in the second half, added to the Miner lead as he took a feed from Peter Vaccaro and a put a shot from about 10 yards away by Schmidt at the 68:40 mark.

Both teams had good scoring opportunities prior to Brinkmeyer's goal. Vaccaro had a head ball attempt in the opening minute that went wide, then S&T's Pat McNamee made a good stop on a shot from Forrest McCurren just over a minute later.

Schmidt robbed Atagana of a goal with a leaping save in the 12th minute of play, then McNamee did likewise on back-to-back attempts in the second half by Troy Green and McCurren, making a diving save to stop the initial shot and then knocking away McCurren's rebound attempt.

McNamee finished with seven saves on the afternoon for the Miners (3-1, 1-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference), who outshot the Cardinals 23-16 for the contest.

S&t returns to action Friday when it plays Southern Indiana in a 7:30 p.m. contest in Evansville, Ind.
