Box Score (Hillsdale, Mich.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners historic 2011 season came to a tough end on Friday evening as it lost to the eighth ranked and top seeded Hillsdale Chargers
3-1 (20-25, 25-16, 12-25, 18-25) in the NCAA Midwest Regional at Jesse Phillips Arena in Hillsdale, Mich.
The Lady Miners were tied at 5-5 early on before the Chargers (28-2) went on a 6-0 run to take an 11-5 lead. The lead grew to 21-11 before S&T began to charge back eventually getting to within 24-20 but couldn't get any closer. Apryl Schmucker ended the set with a kill for the set win.
In the second set the Lady Miners trailed 4-1 early before coming back to take a 7-5 lead. Hillsdale went on a 5-1 run to take a 10-8 advantage. It would be their last lead of the set as S&T scored nine of the next 10 points to take a 17-11 lead and wouldn't look back on its way to evening the match with a 25-16 win.
Hillsdale led 9-8 in set three and began to pull away thanks to an 8-3 run giving them control of the set at 17-11. The Lady Miners got within five but no closer as the Chargers scored the last eight points of the set.
S&T fell behind early in set four and were never able to recover as Hillsdale grabbed a seven point advantage. The Lady Miners got as close as six on a couple of occasions late in the set but couldn't get any closer than that as the Chargers held off the late surge to win 25-18.
S&T finished the match with 48 kills and hit 19.8 percent and was led by
Erin Bekebrede (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles) with 13 kills.
Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) and
Jackie Zellmer (Nixa, Mo./Nixa) added 11 and 10 kills respectively.
Jennifer Costello (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South ) had 42 assists while
Jocelyn DeMotte (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) had 16 digs.
Hillsdale recorded 51 kills but committed 12 fewer errors en route to hitting 34.5 percent for the match. Ashlee Crowder, the Midwest Region Player of the Year, led the Chargers with 17 kills. Lauren K. Grover added 12 more. Schmucker dished out 43 assists and had 12 digs.
The Lady Miners finish their season with a record of 24-10 and were the Great Lakes Valley Conference's West Division Champions.
