(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners used a balanced offensive attack as it had four players finish with double figure kill totals to down Wisconsin-Parkside 3-1 (26-28, 25-19, 25-21, 25-21) on Friday evening in Rolla. With the win S&T snapped its three match losing streak and also snapped the Rangers seven match winning streak.
The Lady Miners (8-6, 3-2 GLVC) led for a majority of the opening set but were unable to put away UW-Parkside (10-4, 4-1 GLVC) as it rallied back from down three set points to take the opener 28-26. While both offenses combined for 27 kills they also had 21 errors in the frame. Samantha Klump (Ash Grove, Mo./Homeschooled) and Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) led the S&T attack with four kills apiece in the frame while Courtney Stack led the Rangers with five.
In the second set the two sides traded the first 12 points before the Lady Miners went on a 7-0 run to gain control of the match. The lead eventually grew to 18-10 before Parkside cut the lead down to 18-14, but S&T held strong answering the run and pushing its lead back to eight at 24-16. The Rangers scored three straight points to close within five, but Klump recorded a kill to end the set and square it at 1-1.
The Lady Miner offense picked it up in the second set recording 14 kills against five errors in 27 chances to finish the frame hitting 33.3 percent. Katie Herington (Kalona, Iowa/Mid-Prairie) had five kills in seven chances to pace the S&T offense. The Lady Miners also got three service aces in the frame from Erin Bekebrede (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles).
S&T's defense was able to force one more error on Parkside and held them to 19.4 percent with 12 kills in 31 chances.
The third set looked like the Lady Miners were going to run away with it getting out to an early seven point lead, but just like the first two sets the Rangers mounted a comeback eventually taking a 19-18 lead.
It was short lived though as S&T ran off three straight points to regain the lead and then scored four of the final six points to win the set 25-21 and grab the 2-1 edge.
The Lady Miner offense finished the third frame hitting 40.6 percent recording 17 kills in 32 chances. They were led by Bekebrede with seven kills against no errors in 10 chances.
Parkside finished the third set hitting 33.3 percent with 12 kills against three errors in 27 chances.
The Rangers grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the fourth set before S&T ran off nine straight points. Four of the nine points in the run came off of service aces by Wright. The Rangers regrouped and took their last lead of the night at 14-13 on a Lady Miner mistake. S&T then ran off six points in a row to regain the lead for good. Wright and Herington combined for five kills in the run.
Parkside whittled the lead down to 20-18 but got no closer as S&T was able to pull away and eventually win the match on a kill from Bekebrede.
The Lady Miners hit only 14 percent in the final frame but had five service aces. The Rangers on the other hand hit 18.2 percent.
S&T finished the match with 60 kills in 146 chances and had a hitting percentage of 21.2. It also had one of its best serving nights in school history with 13 service aces.
The Lady Miner defense held the Rangers to just 17.5 percent and forced them into 23 errors.
Klump had 17 kills to lead S&T. She was joined in double figures by Bekebrede with 13 while Herington and Wright had 10 each. Jennifer Costello (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South ) had 51 assists and Bridget Williams (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) had 15 digs.
Cassy Marx and Addie Kramer had nine kills apiece for Parkside. Stack had 23 set assists while Stacie Bower had 14 digs.
The Lady Miners return to action on Saturday evening when they host Lewis University at 5 p.m.
