Miners suffer first loss of season to undefeated Colorado Mines

9/6/2009 10:28:13 PM

FAYETTE, Iowa – Despite holding a 17-12 advantage in shots for the afternoon, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2009 campaign Sunday when Colorado School of Mines scored in the 23rd minute to hand the Miners a 1-0 loss.

The Orediggers got a goal from Jeff Nelson at the 22:44 mark and made that goal hold up as they remained undefeated on the year through four games.  Nelson's goal came on a shot from 10 yards away.

S&T outshot Mines 9-6 in the opening half and 8-6 in the final 45 minutes, but couldn't get one past goalkeeper Manville Strand. The Miners had five of those shots on goal but Strand turned all of them away.

Miner goalkeeper Pat McNamee (Fenton, Mo./Vianney ) finished with four saves in the contest as S&T finished its season-opening road trip at 0-1-1; the Miners played to a 1-1 tie Friday in their Great Lakes Valley Conference opener at Wisconsin-Parkside.

The Miners return to the pitch Friday when they play their home opener against No. 24-ranked Lewis at the S&T Soccer Field. Game time is at 5 p.m. for the GLVC contest.
