Miners fall short on second half goal to 10th-ranked Drury

9/25/2009 11:37:10 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team played 10th-ranked Drury on even terms on the scoreboard for much of the night, but a second half goal sent the Miners to defeat as the Panthers came away with a  1-0 win at the S&T Soccer Field Friday night.
Steve Wilczewski's goal with just under 26 minutes to play in regulation time was enough to keep the Panthers undefeated at 8-0, despite the fact that the Miners became the first team this season to hold Drury under two goals in a game. The Panthers came into the game ranked fifth in NCAA Division II in scoring at 3.7 goals per game.
The Miners had a couple of good scoring chances in the first half, the best coming when Drury goalkeeper Stephen Conner mishandled a ball off the wet field in the early stages of the contest and Jervis Atagana (Columbia, Mo./Hickman ) got a poke at it, but Conner got a piece of the shot to force it wide of the net.
Drury broke the scoreless tie at the 64:17 mark when Jake Allison made a cross from near the right corner and Wilczewski drove a shot to the left of Pat McNamee (Fenton, Mo./Vianney ) for what turned out to be the game-winner.
McNamee kept the Miners in the game by making seven saves on the night as the Miners were outshot for only the third time this year; Drury had an 18-10 advantage in overall shots and an 8-6 edge in shots on goal.
S&T will be idle until next Friday, Oct. 2, when it hosts Maryville University in a 7:30 p.m. game.
