Miners open home slate by capturing first GLVC victory

9/11/2009 9:49:59 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's soccer team entered Friday's game with Lewis having not beaten the Flyers since joining the Great Lakes Valley Conference in 2005 – but took care of that matter on one corner kick.
Nicolas Solano headed in Sam Shaffer (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville)'s corner kick with just under six minutes left in the first half and the Miner defense did the rest as S&T opened its home schedule by posting its first conference win of the season, beating Lewis 1-0 at the S&T Soccer Field.
After both teams had stretches with the play in their favor, the Miners got a corner kick opportunity late in the first half and were able to cash it in. Solano headed Shaffer's serve into the upper right corner past Flyer goalkeeper Sebastian Kieruzal for what turned out to be the only goal of the contest.
The Flyers, who had a NCAA Division II-best 16-game unbeaten streak in the regular season snapped Sunday in a 3-0 loss at Drury, were able to get only four shots on net in the final 45 minutes. Three of them were stopped by Miner goalkeeper Pat McNamee (Fenton, Mo./Vianney ) and a fourth chance was headed off the goal line by Shaffer, one of two the Miner defense prevented from going into the net.
S&T (1-1-1, 1-0-1 GLVC) finished with a 13-11 edge in shots for the game as it beat the Flyers (1-2-1, 0-2 GLVC) for the first time since Sept. 14, 2003.
The Miners will host Illinois-Springfield in another GLVC contest Sunday at noon at the S&T Soccer Field.
