ROLLA, Mo. –
Peter Vaccaro (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West ), who had a goal scoring prowess on his resume when he came to Missouri S&T, recorded his first collegiate goal Sunday – and for the Miners, it couldn't have come at a more opportune time.
Vaccaro scored with 1:18 remaining in the second overtime period to give the Miners a
2-1 win over Missouri-St. Louis at the S&T Soccer Field, giving them their second late victory of the weekend to improve to 4-4-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Late in the second overtime period, the Miners made a threat and
Peter Haw (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West ) had a shot blocked by the defense. However, the ball came out to Vaccaro and he put his shot past UMSL goalkeeper Tim Boruff to end the contest.
S&T struck first in the opening half, as
David Kekec (St. Louis, Mo./Ladue) scored on a shot from the left side of the box by hitting a low shot into the far corner of the net for his first goal of the season. The Miners took that 1-0 lead into the half.
UMSL tied the score 13 minutes into the second half, as Blair Spencer knocked in a rebound off Joe Randazzo's free kick.
The game remained tied for the balance of regulation time, then the Tritons had a golden opportunity to win the game late in the first overtime session with a free kick chance just outside the box. But Johnny O'Mara's shot hit the crossbar and a rebound effort went wide, sending the game into the second overtime.
It was there where the Miners, who outshot the Tritons 22-11 for the game and 7-0 in the final period, got the game winner from Vaccaro to give S&T its 11th win over the Tritons in the last 14 meetings.
Pat McNamee (Fenton, Mo./Vianney ) finished with two saves for the Miners, who will return to action Friday at Southern Indiana.
