INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Missouri S&T got its first goal for the 2009 season accomplished Friday night with the only goal of the contest, as the Miners clinched a berth to the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament with a
1-0 victory over the University of Indianapolis.
Peter Vaccaro (Ballwin, Mo./Parkway West ) scored on a point blank shot at the 65:38 mark to break a scoreless tie and give S&T its seventh win in GLVC play. The goal came off an assist from Nicolas Solano, who sent a ball into the box to Vaccaro and he put it past Greyhound goalkeeper Justin Roberts.
The Miners were outshot for the game by a 16-9 margin, including a 10-2 differential in the first half. However, only two of the 10 first half attempts were on goal and McNamee finished the night with three saves, the last coming with just over five minutes remaining when he turned away an effort by Bobby Adkins.
Friday's win keeps the Miners in sixth place in the league standings with one game remaining, but they are still in contention for a first round home game in the GLVC Tournament pending the results of Sunday's play. Wisconsin-Parkside, the team currently in fourth place, hosts league leader Drury and Bellarmine, who is in fifth, hosts Southern Indiana.
Missouri S&T (7-5-1, 7-4-1 GLVC) will have to win its game Sunday – a 2:30 p.m. game against Saint Joseph's in Rensselaer, Ind. – to have any chance to host a first round game on Nov. 1.
