One goal enough for Miners to top Eagles

11/19/2008 12:21:05 PM

The Miners got only one goal on the scoreboard Friday night -- but that was all they needed to come away with a victory in their Great Lakes Valley Conference opener.

Nick Landon (Ballwin, Mo./Marquette) ran down a kick from Missouri S&T goalkeeper Pat McNamee (Fenton, Mo./Vianney ) and scored with just under 15 minutes to go in the first half to give the Miners the only goal they needed to beat Southern Indiana 1-0 at the S&T Soccer Field.

With a breeze at his back, McNamee sent a kick down the field that cleared the defenders and Landon got to the ball first. The junior forward then sent a shot past USI goalie Andrew Haley at the 30:14 mark to give the Miners the lead.

McNamee and the Miner defense did the rest, as the freshman recorded his second shutout of the season with seven saves. Prior to Landon's goal, the Eagles had a shot that went off the goal post and another that grazed the crossbar.

S&T outshot the Eagles 25-11 in the contest.
