Miners drop home finale, head to NKU for GLVC opener

11/19/2008 1:28:37 PM

A quick flurry by Rockhurst early in the first half was all it took for the Hawks to down Missouri S&T's men's soccer team 2-0 Sunday in the Miners' home finale at the S&T Soccer Field.

The Hawks got two goals in a span of six minutes after the Miners had a couple of good scoring chances early in the contest, then shut down S&T's attack for the better part of the next 65 minutes to wrap up the Great Lakes Valley Conference's regular season title and top seed for the conference tournament that begins next week.

Missouri S&T, which had already clinched a spot in the tournament, will open on the road Sunday as it will face 11th-ranked Northern Kentucky in the opening round. The game will start at 2:30 p.m. (Eastern time).

The Hawks got their first goal when Kyle Samuelson hit a shot from the wing past Miner goalkeeper Tom Lawton (Madison, Wis./Madison West) at the 16:12 mark, then added to the lead when Steve Valenta sent a shot through a group of defenders and by Lawton to make it 2-0.

The Miners played on even terms in the shots department in the opening half -- Rockhurst had a 6-5 edge -- but S&T could only get four shots away after the intermission.

Lawton, one of the eight Miner seniors that were in the starting lineup on Sunday, and Pat McNamee (Fenton, Mo./Vianney ) split time in goal. Lawton made one save in the first half, while McNamee was credited with two in the final 45 minutes.
