Miners, Hawks battle to scoreless draw

11/19/2008 1:18:44 PM

For the second Friday in succession, the Missouri S&T men's soccer team played to a scoreless tie as the Miners and Quincy played 110 minutes without a goal in a defensive battle Friday night at the S&T Soccer Field.

The goalkeepers were the beneficiaries of the solid defensive play on both ends, as S&T's Pat McNamee (Fenton, Mo./Vianney ) made eight saves in goal -- including two huge saves in overtime -- and Quincy's Kyle Dillman turned away eight shots as well.

McNamee made big stops on Justin Bower and Jake Pittroff in overtime to keep the game scoreless; earlier in the game, he made a big save on Jayme Groark's scoring chance from point blank range.

The Miners' best scoring chance in the extra time came when Sam Shaffer (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville) had a shot to the far post knocked away by Dillman early in the second overtime period.

The tie leaves the Miners in fifth place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings, but they were unable to clinch a spot in the conference tournament. S&T has two league games remaining, next Friday at Drury and Oct. 26 against Rockhurst in the home finale.
