The Miner swimming team, led by head coach Doug Grooms, recorded one of its top performances ever during the 2001-02 season, including a second place finish at the Central States Invitational and a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Division II Championships.  Among its 25 All-America efforts at the meet were national championships in the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays by the quartet of Dave Belleville, Sean O'Donnell, Bram Olson and Mike Lach, including a defense of the 200-freestyle title won the previous year.  A total of 12 members of the team won at least one All-America award – including seven by Belleville – and all five relay teams finished among the top five nationally in the finals.  At the Central States meet, the Miners had seven event wins that included victories in four of the five relays.
