Shuemaker was one of the top playmaking guards for the Miner basketball team in the early 1980s, averaging in double figures as a scorer and holding a two-to-one assist-to-turnover ratio in his two seasons with the team. He averaged 14.3 points and recorded a conference-high 134 assists to earn second-team All-MIAA honors in the 1983-84 season. During his tenure with the Miners, Shuemaker established both the single-game and single-season marks for assists.
