Klie helped lead the Miner basketball team to two NCAA Division II Tournament appearances and an MIAA championship during a standout career. He ranked among the top scorers in school history with 1,122 points, averaging 12.3 points per game in his four-year career, while pulling down 702 rebounds. He was among the team leaders in those categories during all four years at UMR, a stretch where the Miners went 74-38. He also excelled in track & field, winning four letters and setting the school’s high jump record with a clearance of 6-8. Klie earned second-team Academic All-America honors and was the recipient of an NCAA Post-Graduate scholarship.
