The first freshman to win the Gale Bullman Award, Norberg won All-America honors nine times during his four-year swimming career. He was the first UMR competitor to finish among the top six at the national meet in four consecutive years and placed second in the 200-yard butterfly at the 1975 NCAA Division II Championships. He also had two fifth place showings and a sixth place finish in that event at other national meets and won All-America honors three times in the 400-yard individual medley. He was a member of four MIAA championship teams while setting numerous school and conference records.
