A standout on the men's soccer team for four seasons, Balassi completed his playing career as a Miner with the second-highest point total in the history of the program. He recorded 21 goals and a record-setting 21 assists for 64 points in helping lead the Miners to a record of 39-31-7. He set the school's single season record with eight assists in the 1989 campaign, one which he also led the team in scoring with 24 points as he also scored eight times and was also part of the Miners' 1987 team which set school records for goals and points. For his performance, Balassi earned NSCAA all-Midwest region honors in all four seasons of play and was a first-team All-MIAA selection following the 1988 season.
