The Miners' 1985 cross country team was one of the best in school history, as it finished third in the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletics Association and fifth at the NCAA regional meet. The team finished among the top three teams in six of the nine meets it competed in during the season, which included two meet wins and a second place finish in the Miner Invitational. Five freshmen – including top runners Tim Swinfard and Andy Prater – were among the top runners for the Miners during the season along with senior Curt Elmore. The Miners held a national ranking throughout the season.
