A member of two basketball teams that played in the NCAA Division II Tournament, Franklin was an all-conference performer each of those two seasons. He led the 1975-76 MIAA champions in scoring and ranked among the MIAA leaders in that category as well as field goal percentage. Franklin was also among the Miners’ scoring leaders as a junior when he helped lead UMR to its first NCAA Tournament appearance. He also played a season of football for the Miners as a running back and scored five touchdowns in 1976.
