Spafford was a standout center on the Miner football teams of the late 1930s. He played between 1937 and 1940, winning first-team All-MIAA honors on two occasions. He was also a member of the M-Club, Blue Key and later in life initiated the International Explorers Club. He was also a noted authority on Mayan civilization.
