John and Kristie (Capps) Gibson are supporters of the university and have made significant gifts to enhance the athletic programs at S&T. One of their largest contributions led to the renovation of the basketball and volleyball arena at the Gale Bullman Multi-Purpose Building – now known as Gibson Arena. This renovation included a new wooden floor, goal systems, public address system, and the renovation of the men’s and women’s basketball locker rooms. John played basketball for the Miners from 1972-74 under head coach Billy Key. Following graduation from S&T, John and Kristie went on to have successful professional careers with Exxon Company USA and Phillips Petroleum Company. Kristie then retired to focus on raising their daughter, Katie. John continued his professional career with Koch Energy and later with ONEOK and ONEOK Partners, where he would serve as chairman, president, and CEO until his retirement. In 2015, he received the Dr. Charles Bertram Alumni of Distinction Award from the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
