Kuta was a standout performer in the Miner swimming program, becoming the university's first student-athlete to earn a berth to the United States Olympic Trials in the sport. During his career as a Miner, he earned five All-America awards in the freestyle events and established school records in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle. He was the first swimmer in Miner history to break 21 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle and 46 seconds in the 100, marks that helped him earn the berth to the 1992 Olympic Trials.
