A solid two-way performer for the Miner football team, Murphy earned All-MIAA honors as an end following the 1955 season when he served as a co-captain for the squad. In that 1955 season, he caught three of the Miners' six touchdown passes, which included a 77-yard touchdown catch in a win over Washington University. He also competed in track & field, earning a second place finish in the javelin throw at the 1955 MIAA Outdoor Championships. Following his years as a student-athlete at MSM, where he also served as M-Club president, Murphy went on to become a successful businessman in the real estate business in Connecticut while continuing to support the university on a number of activities.
