The Miners' 1977 football team ended a 21-year championship drought for the program, as the team posted a 7-3-1 overall record and 4-1-1 mark in the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association. After dropping two of their first three games, the Miners knocked off Pittsburg State on the road to start a run of five wins in their next six contests and captured their share of the title with a win over Northeast Missouri State on the final day of the season. The 1977 Miners had nine players named to the All-MIAA team, including five first team selections that included leading rusher Terry Ryan with a school record 1,314 yards; top receiver Andy Cox, who caught 37 passes from first-team quarterback Ken Vaughn; and defensive standouts Greg Elzie and Kevin Wolf.
