Coon was a key member of the Miner swimming teams in the mid-1980s, earning All-America honors in all four seasons he competed at UMR. He tied the previous national record in the 200-yard individual medley during the finals as placed second in the event in 1986. He also earned All-America honors in both breaststroke events, the 400-yard individual medley and in the relays. In addition, Coon set school records during the 1986 national meet in both individual medley events, where he had a third place finishes on an individual basis in the 400-IM and in the 200-yard breaststroke.
