Smith was a four-year letterman in baseball and football for the Miners, competing for the Miner baseball team that won the 1972 MIAA championship and played in the NCAA Tournament for the first time. He earned all-region and all-conference laurels during that season and was also selected as the team’s most valuable player. Smith served as the team captain for three years and recorded a .444 batting average as a freshman. In football, Smith earned All-MIAA honors on three occasions as a center while playing on some of the best offensive lines in school history.
