A standout in two sports as a Miner, Sorensen earned All-America honors as a member of the men's track & field squad by finishing third in the high jump at the 1994 NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships. He cleared 6-9 at the national meet after going over the bar at a record height of 6-10 ¾ earlier that season at two meets, one of them the prestigious Kansas Relays. He competed at three NCAA championship meets during his career, including a seventh place effort at the 1993 outdoor nationals and was a two-time MIAA champion in the outdoor high jump. In football, he played four seasons for the Miners and was the Miners' leading receiver in the 1994 season with 29 receptions; one of his key receptions of that season keyed a rally for the Miners in a late-season victory over Missouri Southern.
