S&T's Deshawn Jones named to AP Division II All-America team

ROLLA, Mo. -- Missouri S&T running back Deshawn Jones (Olympia Fields, IL/Rich Central), who has earned numerous honors on and off the field for the 2017 season, has earned another award as he was named today to the NCAA Division II All-America team by the Associated Press.

Jones was a second-team selection to the AP All-America squad following a campaign in which he set school and Great Lakes Valley Conference records and was a nominee for the Harlon Hill Award.

Jones led the GLVC in rushing with a school record 1,579 yards and 16 touchdowns this season and was a unanimous pick to the first team following a year in which his rushing total also ranked third in NCAA Division II during the regular season.  The 1,579 yards – the most in a regular season in GLVC history – also included a school and league record 275 yards in a win over Saint Francis (Ill.) in October.

He became the first player in GLVC history to rush for over 100 yards against every GLVC team during a season and finished the year by clearing the 100-yard mark in each of the Miners' final nine games.  Jones also had a 211-yard performance against McKendree and ran for 191 in the season finale against Quincy among his five games with at least 150 yards on the year.

In that season finale, Jones broke the school's single game record by rushing for five touchdowns – all of which came in the first half of that contest.

Jones was also named to the NCAA Division II Collegiate Commissioners Association's all-region first team for Super Region 3 and was selected Tuesday to the College Sports Information Directors of America's Academic All-America second team.

He is the first Miner football player named to an All-America squad since Will Brown in 2014 and is the first Associated Press All-America selection since Bryan Crider was chosen in 2009.

The four running backs selected to the AP Division II All-America team – Jones, Gannon's Marc Jones, Colorado School of Mines' Cameron Mayberry and Edinboro's Walter Fletcher -- all rank among the top five in the nation in rushing yards this season.
