ROLLA, Mo. – Three members of Missouri S&T's football team have landed a spot on the College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-America team today, marking the first time the Miner program has had three student-athletes earn the honor in one year.
Safety
Bo Brooks (Canutillo, TX/Canutillo) was selected to the first team on the squad, while linebacker
Landon Compton (Lamar, MO/Lamar) and running back
Deshawn Jones (Olympia Fields, IL/Rich Central) were second team selections. The three awards – the first for each of the three honorees -- gives the Miner football program a total of 24 Academic All-America selections in its history and marks the second straight year a Miner has been selected.
Brooks, a petroleum engineering major at Missouri S&T, earned second-team All-Great Lakes Valley Conference honors in the secondary this season after making 68 tackles from his safety position and was one of three Miners to record at least 10 pass breakups during the season. Brooks is a two-time academic all-district selection.
Compton, a second-team All-GLVC selection for the third consecutive year and aerospace and mechanical engineering major, finished as S&T's second-leading tackler with 78 on the year. Compton, who was also an academic all-district selection in 2016, also finished fifth in the GLVC with 16 tackles for a loss, the second straight year that he has recorded at least 15 stops behind the line of scrimmage.
Jones, who is majoring in biological sciences at Missouri S&T, led the GLVC in rushing with a school record 1,579 yards and 16 touchdowns this season and was a unanimous pick to the first team following a year in which his rushing total also ranked third in NCAA Division II. Jones set the school and league's single-game rushing record as well when he ran for 275 yards in a win over Saint Francis (Ill.) and became the first player in GLVC history to rush for 100 or more yards against every conference team during a season. He has also earned all-region honors this season and was a nominee for the Harlon Hill Award.
Brooks, Compton and Jones were the only student-athletes selected from a GLVC institution to the Academic All-America squad.
The trio of Miners selected brings Missouri S&T's all-time total of Academic All-America selections to 96, currently the fifth-most of any institution in NCAA Division II. Five S&T student-athletes have already earned Academic All-America honors during the 2017-18 academic year.
Missouri S&T finished the 2017 season with a 7-4 record and in a tie for second place in the GLVC with a 5-2 mark.
