Karsten sets two school, provisional marks at Mizzou

COLUMBIA, Mo.  -- John Karsten (Jefferson City, Mo./Blair Oaks HS) set two school records and reached NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks Friday, highlighting a night for Missouri S&T at the Missouri Collegiate Challenge that saw the Miners win two other events and reach another provisional mark during the course of the meet.

Karsten improved his provisional mark in the weight throw in the process of winning the event with a top throw of 58-1¼, while recording a second place finish in the shot put with a school record mark of 51-11¾, a throw that also made the Division II provisional qualifying standard.

Meanwhile, Jaren Underwood (Mascoutah, Ill./Mascoutah HS) also made a provisional mark in the triple jump with his leap of 46-10¼, which was good for fourth place in the competition.

Joe Bindner (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East HS) had one of the winning performances for S&T in the mile as he won by six seconds over Missouri's Brian Hernan in 4:21.47.  The other first place effort came from Tyler Percy (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West), who took the 800-meters in 1:55.46 in a win by more than two seconds over Truman State's Brice Pavey.

S&T also got a tie for second place with Luke Moehlenbrock (Mountain VIew, Mo./Mountain View-Liberty) and Collin Boner (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Notre Dame Regional HS) in the high jump as both cleared 6-4, while J.R. Frisella (St. Louis, Mo./Oakville HS) finished third in the 400-meters in 51.60 seconds, one of three Miners to finish among the top five in the event.  Stephan Hickman took fourth in 52.15 seconds, while Ben Krause finished fifth in 52.79.

A.J. Scheffler finished fourth in the long jump with a mark of 20-5, as did Lucas Rosenbaum (Sidney, Neb./Sidney HS) in the pole vault with a clearance of 15-0¼, Logan Shearer (The Woodlands, Texas/Woodlands Christian Academy) in the 800-meters in 1:59.18.  David Jones-Richerson (St. Peters, Mo./Duchesne) was fifth in the pole vault at 15-0¼, as was Aaron Francis (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) in the triple jump at 44-8¼ and Kyle Stocker (Solon, Iowa/Cedar Rapids Prairie) in the 800-meters in 2:01.50.

Louis Tribble (Lebanon, Mo./Lebanon) took sixth in the mile with a mark of 4:32.90 along with James Jennings (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) in the 800-meters in 2:03.59, Koby Bird (Kirksville, Mo./Kirksville HS) in the 3,000-meters in 9:25.03 and Nick Barrett (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) in the weight throw at 51-3.

S&T got seventh place finishes from Tim Sills (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap) in the pole vault at 14-6¼ along with Terry Miles (New Bloomfield, Mo./South Callaway) in the 600-yard run in 1:29.85, Brian Scherping (Chesterfield, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) in the 800-meters in 2:03.67 and Connor Crabtree (Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge HS) in the 3,000 in 9:25.14. Krause also added an eighth place showing in the 200-meters in 23.15 seconds.

Alex Bonner (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Notre Dame) was ninth in the shot put at 42-7, as was Adam Kraus (Tulsa, Okla./Thomas Edison Preparatory) in the mile at 4:39.88 and George Garner (St. Louis, Mo./Horton Watkins) in the 800-meters in 2:05.17, just ahead of Zach Pixler's time of 2:05.31.

S&T also got an 11th place showing from Jack Miller (Casa Grande, Ariz./Union) in the pole vault as he cleared 14-0½, Scheffler in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.34 seconds and Mark Echele (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles West) in the shot put at 39-4½, immediately ahead of the throws of 39-4 by Chad Garoutte (Fair Grove, Mo./Fair Grove) and of 38-1¼ by Garrett Friday (New Market, Md./Oakdale HS) that took the next two places in the standings.  Friday was also 10th in the weight throw at 46-4¾ while Echele was 12th at 38-1¼.

The Miners will compete at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships next Saturday and Sunday at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.
