Miners finish up winning season by downing Quincy in finale

11/16/2013 6:22:00 PM

Box Score ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's defense put in another stellar performance Saturday, helping finish off a winning season for the Miners as S&T took down Quincy 20-3 in the season finale at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

The victory allowed the Miners to end the year with a 6-5 overall record – the first time they moved over the .500 mark this season – and a 5-2 mark in Great Lakes Valley Conference play which earned them a tie for second place with Saint Joseph's and Truman State, who dropped into the tie after losing 21-14 on the road to league champion Indianapolis Saturday.

S&T held the Hawks to 202 yards of total offense and forced three turnovers in the game.  Quincy's only score – a third quarter field goal -- came on a drive that started at the S&T 17-yard line after a short punt into a gusty wind.

The Miners and Hawks were caught up in a scoreless tie until the Miners broke through late in the first half with a pair of scoring drives.

First, the Miners took over after a missed Hawk field goal and after taking the ball past midfield, freshman DeSoto Dickson (Florissant, Mo./Trinity Catholic) broke through the line and raced 41 yards for the first touchdown of the contest with 2:17 to go in the half.

S&T's defense forced a punt on the next Quincy possession to give the offense 1:11 to work with and the Miners used nearly every second of that to extend the lead before the half ended.

Starting from their own 20, S&T quarterback Peter Simpson (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) completed four straight passes  -- three of them to Leon Moody (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit HS) – to reach the Hawks' 24-yard line with 15 seconds to go in the half, then completed a fifth straight pass to Melvin Stovall (Los Angeles, Calif./Lancaster) along the sideline.  Stovall cut inside of the Quincy defense and just got into the end zone with four seconds to go to give the Miners a 14-0 halftime lead.

Quincy got on the scoreboard with 9:36 remaining in the third quarter on Blake Allison's 20-yard field goal, but the Miners responded to a turnover on their next possession by getting the ball right back on Chris Horn (Tulsa, Okla./Booker T. Washington)'s interception and return to the Quincy 20.

A late hit penalty on the return moved the ball halfway to the goal line and S&T added to its lead three plays later on Rob Cidlik (Eureka, Mo./Eureka)'s one-yard run that wound up being the last score in a penalty-filled contest.

The Miners held a 422-202 advantage in yards on the afternoon in a game where the teams were flagged for a combined 26 penalties that were accepted.

Simpson completed 21-of-35 throws on the day for 241 yards, while Moody caught seven of the throws for 110 yards.  Dickson ran for 73 yards on 14 carries to lead a 181-yard performance on the ground for S&T.

Quincy was held to just 15-of-47 passing for 131 of its 202 yards on the day.

Horn, one of 14 seniors playing their final home game for the Miners Saturday, had nine tackles to go along with the interception and fellow linebacker Chris Emesih (Houston, Texas/Westfield), who led S&T in tackles for the year, also had an interception to go along with his seven stops.
